artist alvaro sanchez, guatemala: sanchez x sanchez

Sánchez x Sánchez is an exhibition inspired by time, in which artist Álvaro Sánchez of Guatemala tells his story—the development of his individual work and the one carried out together with the Revista Capiusa. The Capiusa Magazine, specializing in cultural content and graphic design opened the doors of its creative center. Alvaro’s work was showcased last month during the ribbon cutting ceremony of this new gallery space.

Three of the works in the show that captured my attention were “Dandy,” “Estampas Profanas” and “El Peso De Los Dogmas.”  Each piece is composed of four 23 x 47″ acrylic panels with Alvaro’s eclectic collage work printed on them.  What is most amazing about this work is how Alvaro creates “depth of field” when looking directly from front view. Once the viewer moves 90 degrees around the piece, the four paralleled spaced acrylic panels appear more distinct. The panels are anchored into a wood base. This is a 360 degree movement-around-the-sculpture experience.

HAF: Wish I could see these in person.

Alvaro: They look lovely. Hope I can do more of this in the future. Maybe outside Guatemala.

HAF: Indeed!

HAF: Was creating depth of field in your initial plan?

Alvaro: Yes, totally. Because even in a flat form those pieces or much of what I do in that style is based in depth because of the many details, and I love that, but yes, from the beginning.

“This inauguration represents the path and evolution we have had. The visitors will know the change of themes, formats, sizes and materials that my art has suffered.”  Alvaro Sanchez
