Amit Ganjoo, India: Aavaran
Artist Amit Ganjoo is currently Director of the School of Fine Arts, IPS Academy, and Indore India. This collection of small terracotta works he calls, “Aavaran,” which means envelope or cover. The forms range from 16 to 18 inches in height, including the pedestal. In May 2017 this collection was exhibited in the Jahangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, India.
HAF: Amit, how do you explain the term, “Aavaran” as it relates to this series of faces?
Amit: We have not opened our inside cover by other things. The face is important for the expression—inside cover by outside—a duality—portrait under shell as Aavaran. It symbolizes the outer appearance of a person that he/she showcase in from of the world and hide the reality inside. This instinct of knowing the people and surrounding also defines another aspect of my work that is friendship.
HAF: What projects are you currently working on Amit?
Amit: Presently I am working on project urbanization, in which I use pillars which are in the form of vertical or horizontal cuboids and arches, which are a symbol of stiffness and dominance of the urban cities, where humans and nature is captive of a concrete building, the freedom is just a physical attribution and the inherent mind is imprisoned in a cage of urbanization.
[kopa_blockquote border=”left”]Sculptures are the only things that I was born to create. As my teacher said, it happened many years ago when I joined my fine arts college. I am always curious about my surroundings and always wanted to know a thing in a better way. I write poetry and covert them into sketches, but sculpture comes to me in a different way. I mostly prefer to work in clay, but explored different mediums too like stone, ceramics, marble, and metal. Working in clay is more amusing, clay is the origin of life creating my sculptures in clay, is like creating something out of my own existence. I feel connected and so it becomes easy to handle while modeling. in my notion, creativity is not bound by time. idea or thoughts knock my mind very frequently. clay helps me to complete my sculpture in a short period so that I can work on different concept in limited time durations.
