Artist Ron Shelton’s photograph of “Our Plastic World” was designated for display in the BBC News photo gallery, “In Pictures.”  Each week BBC News selects a different theme for its readers in the Thursday gallery presentation.  Plastic was the theme for the July 18, 2019 gallery. Ron’s image was one of ten images selected from a group of photographers around the world.  This image is a photograph of the installation he designed and developed for the 2018 CAN Triennial in Cleveland, Ohio. “Our Plastic World” is an ongoing project that addresses the dangers of plastics in our global community. This installation is composed of five cylinders consisting of 3 x 3in cut plastic pieces that were then woven together with wire. Four of the cylinders are 3ft in length with a 23in diameter, and the center “yellow” cylinder is 5ft in length with a 23in diameter. Ron resourced plastics from his daily use and from contributions from his community.

[kopa_blockquote border=”left”]For the past two years, I have held onto every plastic packaging and container which were the components for my 2018 site-specific installation projects: CAN Triennial, Firefish, Lakewood Light-in-sight, and Rooms to Let. This ongoing study is referred to as “Our Plastic World.” My plastic hoarding has given me the insight as to how much plastic one person can generate in a years time; and it is mind-blowing. The impact of this project is to bring to our community the importance of the plastic problem and to rethink how we process this material.  Ron Shelton[/kopa_blockquote]
