This is the 2nd wave of WOI’s Living Wall, featuring the visual artworks of Anwar Djuliadi, DP Arsa, Kaprus, and Oka Astawa. This is a progressive art exhibition (with artists conversations) held at Bloo Art Space at the Bloo Lagoon Resort in Padang Bai, a small town in Bali. The exhibition opens May 20 at 4pm and closes on Jun 2 at 7pm.
WOI (Wall of Indonesia) is a progressive art exhibition that also serves as a campaign by the artists to contribute to the identity discourse of Indonesian artists. With its dynamic settings, WOI would like to promote the development of Indonesian artists by offering a sharing platform where artists can trace the same common geographical backgrounds and exchange artistic responses beyond the technical aspect of their work.
What is an Indonesian artist?
This question has being considered many times in this globalized era where local essences are often sacrificed from the journey of an Indonesian artist. It becomes more perplexing given the fact that the Indonesian visual arts were built on the basis of western theory being taught in every formal art institution in Indonesia. Is it appropriate for an artist to bear a geographical title where the socioeconomic and political climates must be put into context to appreciate the work of art? Is it not enough for an artist to commit to personal values and honesty so that the artwork can be universal before the eyes of the world?
Living Wall is a white wall of Bloo Art Space that will gradually be filled with dozens, possibly hundreds, of artworks from the WOI artists. The WOI will show every step taken within this 2 month journey, from the artists’ studios all the way to the exhibition. The 1st wave, where the WOI will be opened, will feature empty walls of the gallery. There, the audiences will be part of the artworks display process that will be finalized by the Cata Odata curator team. WOI hopes to encourage a casual and spontaneous dialog between the artists and audiences.
