Art in Veere, is an artist collective in the Netherlands by and for artists that organizes art exhibitions and interacts with cultural partners and entrepreneurs in Veere. Every year, members organize an art route for guest exhibitors. A beautiful range of authenticity, imagination, and craftsmanship awaits you from Friday, May 30, to Sunday, June 1, 2025. The guest exhibitors show their work in numerous locations. Art in Veere has an open call for artists to propose their work in this exhibition. Longtime HAF member and artist Marijke Leertouwer is one of the coordinating artists who tells HAF more about this unique artistic experience.
HAF: Hello, Marijke. I want to quickly mention to our audience that you have been a member of HAF since 2014. Happy ten years! I have always admired your non-traditional-experimental art genre. I recently learned of Art in Veere via one of your recent Facebook posts. I did some digging and found that past residency members produced significant work. Can you tell us more about it?
Marijke: Hi, Ron. Art in Veere is a yearly event in my hometown in the South of the Netherlands. Five local artists organize Kunstroute Veere with a heart for the historic town of Veere. Veere is a popular tourist destination; 100 years ago, it was an artist’s colony. Right now, about 15 artists live in this small town. We have a museum and a huge church that is a cultural center. The locations in this ‘kunstroute’ are galleries, artists’ workshops, and public open spaces; people of Veere open their gardens, cellars, and homes to the public. The artists in the Kunstroute are very diverse. Some are professionals who can live off their work, while others are amateurs who only exhibit in our town.
HAF: How do artists apply to Art in Veere? I know the deadline is approaching: November 1, 20214.
Marijke: The artists must be present during the event’s three days. They must fill in a form and send four photos so we can judge their work and determine a suitable location. The art route is on a busy, high-season weekend, which is good because there are many people, but unfortunately, it also means that the B&Bs charge more than in low season. The deadline for the open call is November 1, 2024. Usually, more applicants are available than exhibit locations, so the committee has to select while considering the available space’s quality, diversity, and suitability. An interesting spot is the centuries-old cistern. Artists inspired by the water and history of Veere are invited to propose work for this exhibition. For more information, visit: www.kunstinveere.nl
